Shadow Warrior 3 looks great on Xbox Series X and features console-specific enhancements. My favorite has to be the katana-wielding ninja. Every beast is unique and requires some skill to overcome. While past entries had your standard enemies and some mythological creatures, this game really cranks it up to 11. Shadow Warrior 2 was a little dreary for my taste, but the sequel is bathed in bright red and green materials.
It’s much more vibrant than past entries, and takes the aesthetic of the original in a bold new direction. Shadow Warrior 3 does an amazing job with colors. Shadow Warrior 3 plays a lot like an arena brawler and you’ll need all the help you can get when playing at higher difficulty settings. While the grappling hook feels more scripted, it’s still interesting to use when you’re fighting monsters in closed environments. Just look for the jade circles dotted around levels. Shadow Warrior 3 also features a grappling hook that allows you to access even more areas. Combining these allows you to reach new areas and engage enemies in a variety of ways, especially if they're below you. You have a number of skills at your disposal like a double jump, wall run, and dash. For example, you can rip out one of the monster’s eyes and use it to freeze nearby enemies.Īs much as Shadow Warrior 3 is about combat, traversal also plays an important role in the game. The game takes heavy inspiration from Microsoft’s title, even when it comes to using body parts of enemies against them. While a really fun experience, its lacking environments and incredibly short playtime make this a hard game to recommend at full price. The enemies are also almost all bullet sponges, so you’ll find yourself out of ammo in your favorite guns most of the time. Shadow Warrior lacks the power fantasy of a game like Doom and it becomes a shortcoming with the size of mobs and the amount of damage each enemy can do.

A lot of the mob-type battles become increasingly frustrating if you don’t find the upgrade orbs or complete the challenges to gain upgrades. Maybe you’ll stumble onto the occasional puzzle however, these are incredibly rare. It’s a cutscene, a fight, parkour, rinse and repeat. And from the finishers, most enemies will surrender a powerful weapon to help simplify the slaughter of the mob. You collect power-ups to gain finishers, reminding me of the newer Doom games. Cutting through and shooting enemies is a ton of fun, reminding me of Doom Eternal or Serious Sam. The lines were performed well every quip with a perfect deadpan or sarcastic tone to match the joke left me with at least a good chuckle. Every character sounds exactly how I would think they would. The one thing I will give this game without a second thought is the sound of finishers being particularly squishy. The explosions were a typical cartoon boom, and so on. Every gun sounded with the exact bang you would expect. The Japanese instrumentals with the guitar provided perfect harmony while keeping pass with the gameplay. I did find the environments pretty lacking as most were just arenas and pahs that are sometimes too clearly defined.

But when transitioning from gameplay to cutscene there was a massive lag spike which is hopefully fixed with a quick patch in the near future. The facial models look good, the blood and gore look goopy and gross, and all the slashing, shooting and parkour animations are fluid - all while moving really fast and being ferocious. I haven’t played the original Shadow Warrior 3 so this is going to be my fresh thoughts on the game as someone who did have a pretty good time with Shadow Warrior and Shadow Warrior 2. So if you enjoyed Shadow Warrior 3, you’ll like Definitive Edition. Shadow Warrior 3: Definitive Edition is an upgrade to last year’s game for next-gen consoles.
